IL: You've been involved in a lot of charity lately. More of the interview with Wil Shipley after the jump > Now it's become our trademark feature, which was a nice surprise. It took over a month to figure out the blecherous old Carbon QuickTime interfaces, then another couple months to write the first version of the vectorized code that actually understands barcodes. It was about a week into the project that I thought up using the iSight as a barcode scanner, and at the time I had no idea if it was even possible in theory. There were several shareware versions of this kind of product on the market when Mike Matas and I first formed Delicious Monster, and it was Mike who looked around and said, "If there are all these shareware programs that do the same thing, then there's probably a market for a really polished program that does this." I call this the iTunes approach - Apple didn't invent MP3 collection and playback, they just made it really, really nice, and so they get all the credit. I think it was the first thing I thought up when I started programming, and I originally wrote something like this in BASIC on an Apple //e when I was 13-I called it "DiskDB." it was going pretty well, but then I simply ran out of RAM on my computer, so I couldn't write any more code. WS: Honestly, an application to catalog all your media is the least original idea ever.
IL: What was your initial inspiration for writing Delicious Library? We were able to catch him for a few words about his inspirations, what he thinks of the controversy that has become MacHeist, what we might expect for Delicious Library 2, what's in the future for him, and how, exactly, he likes to salsa-dance. With the hit that is Delicious Library making its rounds around Mac software land and Delicious Library 2 on the way, founder of Delicious Monster and Omni co-founder Wil Shipley has been, to put it lightly, a busy guy.
